Marukyan on Vanetsyan: His Statement Marks the Beginning of His Political Activity

Edmon Marukyan, the leader of the 'Enlightened Armenia' faction in the National Assembly, expressed his frustration over the media coverage of a bill they presented and which was approved in the first reading in the parliament. During a press briefing, he stated that he sees elements of anti-propaganda in the coverage.

“The bill to amend the laws on the NSS and Police has been reported as if we are bringing a draft that allows anyone to become the head of the NSS. However, the head of the NSS and the Chief of Police can only be appointed individuals who meet the criteria of a member of parliament. The most important position in the Republic of Armenia is that of the head of the Executive body, and the Prime Minister can be appointed according to the criteria for a member of parliament,” he said.

Marukyan emphasized that they will continue to fight against the super-presidential system and continue to insist that the NSS and Police must be accountable to the National Assembly. “We will consistently continue to present drafts aimed at transforming that system to create a more democratic framework. If those positions were not political, our Police Chief now would be Vova Gasparyan. Previously, Serzh Sargsyan appointed Kutoian as Deputy Prosecutor and then took him to be the head of the NSS to meet his requirements,” noted Marukyan.

Regarding the resignation of NSS Director Artur Vanetsyan, Marukyan emphasized that he does not have all the details. At the same time, he added that they feel Vanetsyan's announcement is far-reaching. “With that statement, I believe he is marking the beginning of his political activity and will try to continue his work in the political field. Whether that will be through creating a party or in some other way, that’s what I see in this statement,” emphasized Edmon Marukyan.

According to Marukyan, the decision of Artur Vanetsyan's resignation was a surprise for the Enlightened Armenia faction. MP Mane Tandilyan from the faction also agreed with her colleague, adding that Artur Vanetsyan was one of the most favored figures in the executive power.
