Chalyan Loses in Bronze Medal Match at World Championship
Member of the Armenian Greco-Roman wrestling team, Karapet Chalyan (77kg), was unable to secure a bronze medal at the 2019 World Championship. In the bronze medal match held in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, he lost to Iranian Mohamadali Geraei with a score of 6-9.
Yesterday, Chalyan started his competition in the 1/16 finals, where he won against Japanese wrestler Shohei Yabikui. He advanced to the 1/8 finals, defeating Venezuelan Jesus Espinosa. In the quarter-finals, he eliminated Belarusian Pavel Lyakhin, which also secured a Tokyo 2020 qualification for Armenia in the 77 kg category. However, he lost to Swedish Alex Byurbeg in the semi-finals.
Thus, the Armenian Greco-Roman wrestling team returns with one bronze and one silver medal. The bronze was earned by Slavik Galstyan (63kg). Olympic champion and three-time world champion Arthur Aleksanyan also became a silver medalist. As is known, he did not participate in the final due to a rib injury and settled for second place. His opponent, Musa Evloev from Russia, took home the gold medal.
The Armenian Greco-Roman wrestlers traveled with a team of nine. Aside from Aleksanyan, Chalyan, and Galstyan, the team also included Norair Hakobyan (55kg), Gevorg Garibyan (60kg), Karen Aslanyan (66kg), Malakhas Amoyan (72kg), Maxim Manukyan (82kg), and Arthur Shahinyan (87kg).
