A Meeting Will Be Held at the CP Office Regarding the Situation Surrounding the Constitutional Court
Armenia's 'My Step' faction leader Lilit Makunts currently does not provide any details regarding the resolution of the crisis surrounding the Constitutional Court (CC). ‘Today there will be a meeting in the 'My Step' faction, during which we will outline our next steps. Measures have already been designed to move forward, but I can only discuss those after the meeting,’ said Makunts.
It should be noted that the National Assembly President Ararat Mirzoyan addressed the situation surrounding the Constitutional Court from the podium today, emphasizing that the Legislature must fulfill its functions as there is a clear suspicion of bias.
According to Makunts, they have already developed options for moving forward; however, she is not rushing to reveal them as they need to reach a final solution through discussion and make a joint decision.
When asked whether the National Assembly is aware that there is a CC crisis and whether it has engaged in the process of resolving it, Makunts did not provide a clear answer, noting that it concerns the entire National Assembly and that she would refrain from commenting.
In response to the observation that it is said there is no legal route to resolve the CC crisis, and whether the legislature would take an illegal path, Makunts replied: ‘We have stated that we are committed exclusively to a legal process and will only proceed with the tools available to the legislature. Therefore, an illegal path is unacceptable to us.’
When asked why they have decided to resolve the crisis now and whether they are waiting for the CC to self-regulate, she mentioned: ‘Of course, the right path in this case is that changes in the judicial system occur from within.’
On the question of why the National Assembly President made such a statement and initiative one day before the court session regarding the change of preventive measures for the second President of Armenia, Robert Kocharyan, Makunts responded: ‘The announcement was made when the National Assembly found it appropriate.’
