Step Out of the Wine-Tasting Room: Ashotyan to Pashinyan

The Vice President of the Republican Party of Armenia, Armen Ashotyan, wrote on his Facebook page: "Recently, French President Emmanuel Macron stated that the existing system of international relations needs to be revised, as democracy has degraded, while also emphasizing that 'capitalism has degraded and gone mad' as well.

Democracy has never been a primary factor in the foreign policy of the Russian Federation. Moreover, Russia is suspicious of those states that have tried to brand themselves as 'democratic' in the international arena.

During the presidency of Donald Trump, U.S. foreign policy became maximally pragmatic, and the previous approaches emphasizing democracy are no longer dominant in American global politics. For instance, this June in Warsaw, when asked by reporters, Trump said that he doesn't care about the state of democracy in Poland.

Against this backdrop, Armenia's chief foreign policy representative, Nikol Pashinyan, declared that democracy should be Armenia's calling card in foreign policy.

Now the question arises: If the three co-chairing countries of the OSCE Minsk Group have such approaches in the global game, how will Armenia, waving the 'democratic flag', achieve the most beneficial solution in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict? How will it strengthen the security of the two Armenian states?

P.S. You can still drink to your health inside the country and enjoy yourself, but when representing the state, step out of the wine-tasting room."
