VIDEO: The Bottom of Lake Sevan Has Turned into a Dump
This year's study results are alarming. Experts have assessed the condition of the lake as poor; Lake Sevan's water has been murky for a long time, even in deeper areas, and the population of crayfish continues to decline.
Experts point out that temperature is a serious factor, and many processes occurring in the lake are related to this factor. However, waste plays an equally important role.
“You can find anything at the bottom of the lake. Even scientific research is complicated by the nets and traps found on the bottom. Equipment is lowered, but before reaching the bottom, it gets stuck in a net or caught by some trap, creating a risk of losing the equipment. When a boat approaches the coastal areas for research, all shores are covered with fishing nets and traps that were simply abandoned by fishermen and have become useless,” said the experts.
Divers from the Armenian Center for Underwater Research and Diving were astonished by the amount of garbage flowing into Lake Sevan from the rivers.
