Finally, Have We Reached a Conclusion on What is Happening with Lake Sevan? – Pashinyan to Minister

The government meeting today began with a discussion on the Ijevan incident and continued with the issue surrounding Lake Sevan. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan asked the Minister of Environment, Erik Grigoryan, whether they had finally come to a conclusion regarding what is happening with Lake Sevan.

The minister reported that the situation is already quite good, with the level of water transparency significantly higher than in the previous two years. Regarding the blue-green algae, Grigoryan stated that their rapid growth has been linked to several factors, including climatic conditions, the influx of wastewater, and flows from improperly treated areas.

Grigoryan announced that a similar situation has been observed in many water basins under their observation worldwide. “In any case, reducing that wastewater and increasing the water level is our primary goal. And at this moment, the situation is good,” said Grigoryan.

According to the minister, despite the existing problems, the water level of Lake Sevan is currently 2 cm higher than last year, and this year, less water has been taken from the lake for irrigation in the Ararat Plain compared to last year.
