Warning: Do Not Consume Mushrooms of Unknown Origin

On July 2, at 2:30 PM, five members of the same family from Martuni city sought medical help at the 'Martuni' Medical Center. This was reported by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Armenia. The patients were hospitalized in the intensive care unit.

Based on their medical history, they were diagnosed with 'acute exogenous mushroom poisoning.' The patients had consumed mushrooms they gathered in the forest, which they identified as 'champignon' type mushrooms. Necessary medical assistance was provided to the patients. Two of them were discharged the same day, while the others remain in the general ward and continue their treatment. The condition of the latter is assessed as satisfactory.

To avoid mushroom poisoning and subsequent complications, the Ministry of Health again warns: do not consume mushrooms of unknown origin, do not collect mushrooms near roadsides, do not rely solely on pictures to distinguish edible from poisonous mushrooms, as poisonous mushrooms often grow close to edible ones and can look very similar. Do not accept folklore beliefs as a basis for determining mushroom safety, such as the notion that poisonous mushrooms are not approached by insects or animals, or that boiling silver will turn black in the presence of poisonous mushrooms. Avoid eating raw mushrooms, do not feed children mushrooms, and people with gastrointestinal issues are advised against consuming mushrooms. Do not consume mushrooms with alcohol, as it activates certain toxins. Fresh mushrooms should not be stored for more than one day, even under refrigeration, and do not engage in self-medication.
