Restaurant in the Premises of the Mother Cathedral: Citizens' Complaints and Reactions

Aurora News has received reports from a group of citizens about a restaurant operating in the territory of the Mother Cathedral of Holy Etchmiadzin, essentially a place for eating and drinking. Citizens are questioning whether there is a legal basis for such activities within the church premises. The establishment in question is the 'Agape Refectory.'

One of the citizens who approached us asked, 'Now I want to sell ice cream in that area; I'm sure I would make good income. Can I do that?'

Following the reports, we contacted the press office of the Ejmiatsin municipality, where officials stated that they have no authority over any structures on land belonging to the church.

The information system of the Mother Cathedral also informed that no new buildings have been constructed on church territory: 'The mentioned structure has existed for a long time, and its purpose has changed over time. It is not a restaurant but rather a dining hall.'

When asked if by 'dining hall' they meant a place that does not pursue any commercial goals, where food is served and guests can express gratitude and leave, they replied, 'The dining hall has been entrusted to an international operator with significant experience in managing historical and cultural sites. Of course, some funds are still spent for the needs of the church.'

Perhaps it is worth adding that no matter how much we explain that it is a dining hall, it remains incomprehensible to people why it is acceptable to visit a restaurant to eat within the church grounds.
