President Proposes Vahe Grigoryan for Constitutional Court Judge Position

For at least a year, the President of the Republic has been involved in the process of proposing candidates for the vacant position of judge at the Constitutional Court, in accordance with the powers reserved for him by the Constitution.

According to the President's office, he has conducted this responsible process transparently and democratically, adhering to his constitutional powers, maintaining constitutional norms, and relying on principles of impartiality and objectivity.

In order to receive proposals for potential candidates and opinions about the candidates, the President initiated a series of procedures that comply with the law and met with numerous experts in the legal field, as well as reputable representatives from the legal community, including academic and legal circles.

Over the course of the year, despite several announcements regarding the acceptance of candidates’ applications, the number of potential candidates has remained very limited. The selection of a candidate for the position of judge at the Constitutional Court is essentially confined to just a few individual lawyers who are qualified for the position.

Emphasizing the importance of the efficiency of the legal system, including the operations of the Constitutional Court, and considering that the selection of a candidate for the position of Court member cannot become an endless process or the subject of political bargaining, the President proposes the candidacy of Vahe Grigoryan, based on the discussions held in the last two days with representatives of the legal community and potential candidates.

The President hopes that upon being elected as a judge of the Constitutional Court, Vahe Grigoryan will contribute to enhancing the efficiency of the Court's operations and the full realization of the powers vested in the judge of the High Court by constitutional justice.

Note: Considering the past year's experience, the President deems it necessary to discuss the possibility of appointing a Constitutional Court judge in the future, by altering the current procedures, keeping in mind the logic of the regulations in Article 138 of the Constitution (Temporary Appointments of Officials).

It should be noted that Vahe Grigoryan's candidacy had previously been proposed for this position in October 2018, but he was not elected.
