Transitional Justice Will Not Bring Paradise, but It Will Help Us Out of Hell: Ruben Karanga

Parliamentary hearings titled "Prospects for Implementing Transitional Justice Mechanisms in Armenia" are underway in the National Assembly, during which ICT expert Ruben Karanga delivered a speech.

According to him, justice in Armenia must also align with the demands and expectations of the revolution.

“Let us remember the families of those who were killed, injured in 2008, those who suffered from torture or political imprisonment, the mothers in black who have sought justice for why their sons were killed in a non-combat situation, or the pensioners who live in conditions of cold and hunger, while political figures accumulate wealth, and the students who have lost their hope for a bright future,” Karanga said.

The expert stated that transitional justice is about restoring trust in the branches of executive, legislative, and judicial power and reflecting that trust.

“The goal of transitional justice is not to bring us paradise, but it can help us out of hell,” he said.

Karanga noted that there are numerous examples of vetting that have yielded better results in several countries, while in others, results were not as favorable. However, he pointed out that Armenia finds it attractive to consider the examples from the region within the framework of the Council of Europe.
