Criminal Cases Against the Karbi Community Mayor: Residents Report He Continues to Serve
The mayor of the Karbi community in the Aragatsotn Province, Karo Baghdasaryan, remains at the center of scandalous narratives.
Residents have stated in an interview with ArmDay.am that the mayor addresses any issue in the village as he sees fit.
"The school is in their hands, so is the kindergarten and the village administration. Lands belonging to the village are sold to foreigners; there have been cases where the owner only found out that his land was sold after the sale," said one resident, who requested anonymity.
According to the residents, there are numerous complaints surrounding the mayor's name, and even criminal cases have been initiated in the Investigative Committee. They claim he has seized land from villagers and accepted large bribes, yet there has been no progress in preventing the mayor's illegal actions.
In an interview with the media, the Investigative Committee confirmed that criminal cases have been launched against Karo Baghdasaryan.
"There are criminal cases against Karo Baghdasaryan under Articles 179 and 308 in the Investigative Committee," said Naida Harutyunyan, the spokesperson for the Committee.
Residents dissatisfied with the mayor have also noted that their complaints are falling on deaf ears, as they believe the mayor has strong connections with former authorities, which is why he continues to serve as he pleases despite such illegalities. They are concerned that as long as his powers are not at least temporarily suspended, he may interfere with the investigation by exploiting his position.
ArmDay.am also attempted to obtain a comment from the mayor, but the phone calls went unanswered.
It is worth noting that Karo Baghdasaryan has been in charge of the Karbi community since 2012.
