Is Pashinyan Abandoning the 'Madrid Principles'?

According to the newspaper 'Iravunk', 'In the press conference held the day before yesterday, there was certainly no shortage of "marmalistic, exotic, and various other thoughts". One half can be taken with humor, while others provoke certain concerns. However, among that list, several statements concerning Artsakh have raised serious alarm.

For instance, Arman Abovian, a member of the ‘My Step’ faction and the deputy chairman of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Foreign Relations, recently declared that it is possible to sign a contract within the framework of the Minsk Group. During Pashinyan's press conference, however, he countered his own parliament member who holds a certain official position in Armenia's foreign policy by stating that ‘there is no discussion or work regarding a specific document on the resolution of the Artsakh issue’.

The lack of a specific document means that there are also no fundamental principles upon which preparing such a document is a technical issue. Pashinyan seems to be inclined to think that even those principles do not exist.

In any case, he also noted that if there are somewhat acceptable principles, he will present them to the public: ‘This could be through a rally, a press conference, or a video address. And I will say: is there such an option? Are you allowing discussions within that framework? The biggest question is what we want. Let’s clearly formulate what we want and tell the government: here is your task. Otherwise, we go into negotiations and are accused of selling...’
