No Criminal Activity Reported: Ruben Khachaturyan Addresses Issues Regarding Euthanized Lions at the Zoo

Journalists inquired whether it was true that the lions had been buried shortly after euthanasia in Urtsadzor. Ruben Khachaturyan, the director of the zoo, responded to reporters' questions by stating that the animals were euthanized due to health issues.

“There is no criminal activity; the animals were buried in agreement with the foundation. Euthanasia is the procedure used. The reason was the illness,” he stated.

According to him, three lions were suffering from various ailments.

“You can personally see and verify that there is nothing hidden. We have shared the information; unfortunately, the previous authorities are no longer available to answer whether there was consent or not,” he added.

Reporters also questioned whether he continued to receive funding for the euthanized lions.

“That is slander. The claim that I have continued to receive money for the lions exists in letters directed to various bodies — the Investigative Committee, the police, the Prime Minister, the NSS, and the city administration. All these points have been under detailed examination by these bodies for over six months. Unfortunately, the legal processes are slower than the public opinion can be shaped by such false news. When the investigations are completed, clarity will be brought forth, and a press conference will take place,” he expressed.

Addressing concerns raised by protesters in the zoo area regarding allegations that Ruben Khachaturyan forced the removal of animals and staff from the equestrian center, he responded that this was not within his authority.

“It is within the park area, which has been assigned for management in accordance with established procedures, and the manager himself must understand what is happening with the territory and what processes are occurring. I cannot say anything on that,” he elucidated.

When asked about accusations that he dismissed 80 employees over 8 years and showed poor treatment towards them, he replied, “We should ask the personnel department about the 80 employees. The maximum number that could have been changed is no more than 15. Regarding the alleged poor treatment, 80 people are currently working; you can ask them. If you listen to former employees, also listen to the current employees.”
