Tatoyan Reveals the Conditions of Robert Kocharian's Cell
The conditions of the second president of Armenia, Robert Kocharian, regarding his detention, property, and restrictions on his pension have been outlined in a report shared during a press conference with journalists in the National Assembly by the Human Rights Defender Arman Tatoyan.
He noted that the case has already been sent to court, and at this stage, the authority of the Human Rights Defender has significantly diminished. "I would like to emphasize what is presented in the report: while refraining from giving assessments on the current case, I believe that when the state handles cases that involve public confidence, it bears a much greater responsibility to ensure the rule of law; I have also emphasized the high degree of public accountability that must be exercised regarding this issue of public trust," he said.
The Human Rights Defender stated that due to their joint efforts, they have resolved several issues, particularly concerning electronic communication and family visitation rights. "Prior to that, we confidently intervened regarding the pension, which had been frozen, and through our intervention, it was lifted," he said.
Concerning Robert Kocharian's detention conditions, Arman Tatoyan noted that Kocharian has never expressed dissatisfaction with the treatment of penitentiary staff.
The Human Rights Defender informed that he has visited Kocharian's cell once but has made several visits overall. "It's an ordinary cell without any special conditions," he mentioned.
When asked whether Robert Kocharian is consuming food from the prison kitchen, Arman Tatoyan stated that he does not recall any such complaint.
