Government Allocates $133,200 for Levon Aronian's Participation in Upcoming Chess Championship
The government allocated the equivalent of $133,200 to the "Armenian Chess Federation" during today’s meeting to ensure Levon Aronian's proper participation in the Candidates Tournament for the Chess World Championship.
"The necessity of adopting this project is due to the fact that Levon Aronian, a three-time champion of the Chess Olympiad, winner of the World Team Championship, two-time winner of the World Cup, and the fourth highest-rated chess player of all time, is preparing for the battle for the title of World Champion in 2019. To ensure that Levon Aronian can participate at a proper level in the Candidates Tournament for the World Championship in 2019, it has become necessary to allocate $133,200 to the 'Armenian Chess Federation' to prepare adequately for this qualifying tournament and participate in the World Championship," said Gabriel Ghazaryan, acting Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs.
The winner of the Candidates Tournament will have the opportunity to challenge the reigning champion, Norwegian Magnus Carlsen, for the title of World Champion.
