Law on Providing Support to Those Affected by March 1 Events Unanimously Passed in First Reading

The National Assembly today unanimously adopted in the first reading a bill authored by Vice Presidents Lena Nazaryan and Alen Simonyan titled “On the Support of Individuals Affected During the Events of March 1-2, 2008 in Yerevan.”

The bill proposes to provide support to individuals who were wounded and the families of those who were killed during the events of March 1-2, 2018.

The authors of the draft believe that not all affected individuals were recognized as such during the previous government's term.

Vahé Enfiajyan, head of the Prosperous Armenia faction, stated that the faction would also vote in favor of the bill. It is worth noting that the day before, PPA faction member Mane Tandilyan emphasized the importance of the draft but pointed out the absence of specific deadlines, urging clarification on the timeframe for implementing support.

The draft was adopted unanimously, without any votes against or abstentions. The second reading of the bill will take place during the next session of the National Assembly.

It is reminded that on February 24, 2008, Armenia's Central Election Commission announced that Serzh Sargsyan had won the elections. Participants in the protest demanded a recount of the votes.

On the night of March 1, police forces conducted operational-intelligence actions in Liberty Square to “check the area,” resulting in the removal of thousands of demonstrators from the square.
