Zohrabyan Proposes to Hang or Execute Citizens Who Fail to Repay Loans

The Chair of the Standing Committee on Human Rights Protection and Public Affairs of the National Assembly of Armenia, Naira Zohrabyan, wrote on her Facebook page:

“Yesterday, during parliamentary discussions, a rather senior Member of Parliament from the ‘My Step’ alliance proposed from the parliamentary podium that citizens who are unable to repay their loans should have their cases criminalized after several instances of non-repayment. This is a direct quote from the MP’s speech. In other words, the MP suggests that if a citizen who has taken out a loan is unable to make repayments multiple times, that citizen should be prosecuted.

I have nothing more to say or add. I would just like to remind that today in Armenia, there are 650,000 families, or approximately 1.5 million people, who are borrowers. These people are paying off loans each month, and a significant portion of them cannot repay their loans not because they are ‘swindlers’ or have decided to ‘cheat’ the state, as the MP suspects, but simply because they do not have the money to repay their loans.

However, since the revolutionary trend is simply uncompromising, I suggest that instead of prosecuting citizens who fail to repay their loans, we should hang them. Or better yet, execute them. Execution is a more humane approach. One shot and it’s over,” she wrote.
