Private Medical Universities to be Closed if They Do Not Meet Standards: Education Minister's Directive
According to the newspaper "Zhoghovurd," the Minister of Education and Science of Armenia, Arayik Harutyunyan, has instructed to strengthen oversight over private medical universities. If these medical universities do not comply with international educational standards, the question of closing them will be put forward.
At the same time, the only opportunity for graduates of private medical universities to find employment is to obtain continued postgraduate education. Such education is provided by two institutions in Armenia: the Yerevan State Medical University named after M. Heratsi and the National Institute of Health operating under the Ministry of Health, named after Academician S. Avdalbekyan.
Notably, the Yerevan State Medical University is quite strict regarding the selection of graduates from private universities. In 2017, 150 candidates applied from private universities, but only 40 were accepted. In 2018, 132 candidates applied, with only 13 being accepted. The National Institute of Health admitted 128 graduates from private universities in 2017 and 124 in 2018.
