Sanitek Should Have 8000 Trash Bins in Yerevan, But Only 5000 Are Currently Available: Mayor Marutyan
Does the Yerevan Municipality have the resources to organize waste collection if garbage trucks are at its disposal? This question was posed by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan to the Mayor during today's cabinet meeting.
Hayk Marutyan explained that it is a very complex area, and organizing it is difficult, especially since the municipality has not conducted this type of waste collection in the past. Initially, it will be challenging to implement all of this. However, according to Marutyan, the ability to do so should not be considered in the context of whether they can or cannot, as it still needs to be done.
“The simplest point is that, for instance, if today the company says to itself, 'Okay, I am failing, I agree, I will go,' what do we do? At this moment—nothing. We could be looking at a situation resembling Naples in 2012,” Pashinyan remarked.
Pashinyan inquired whether the waste management company had made the necessary investments. Marutyan replied that they have not made those investments at that level; the company lacks the appropriate number of vehicles and equipment. Instead of the required 8000 trash bins, they currently only have between 4800 and 5000, of which only 1000 are in proper condition.
