Former President of Peru Commits Suicide
The former President of Peru, Alan Garcia, has reportedly committed suicide and died in a hospital in the capital city of Lima. The Guardian reports that the incident occurred during his arrest in connection with a corruption case, as ordered by the court.
The court had decided to hold Garcia in custody for 10 days. At the moment when prosecutors arrived at Garcia's home to present the order, the 69-year-old politician took his own life by shooting himself in the head.
Peru's Interior Minister, Carlos Morán, stated that law enforcement officials had acted within the framework of appropriate protocols.
It has been reported that the former president is suspected of corruption related to the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht. According to the court, Garcia may have received $100,000 in exchange for lucrative contracts with Odebrecht.
