Will the Presidential Residence be Named ‘House of the Republic’? The Question Will Be Discussed

The Head of the Office of the President of the Republic of Armenia, Emil Tarasyan, has sent a letter to Yerevan Mayor Hayk Marutyun, requesting to discuss the naming of the administrative area of the presidential residence located at Baghramyan 26 address as ‘House of the Republic’. This was reported to Armenpress by the Public Relations Department of the Office of the President.

The letter addressed to the Mayor of Yerevan states that since March 1, 2019, the President of the Republic and his staff have moved from 47 Mashtots Avenue to the administrative building of the presidential residence located at 26 Baghramyan Avenue. The building also includes an office for the Prime Minister, and he has access to ceremonial rooms.

It is noted that the ‘Hayastan’ All-Armenian Fund is also located in the administrative building of the presidential residence and conducts its activities there. The residential building adjacent to the presidential administration at the same address, Baghramyan 26, often leads to misunderstandings, especially concerning the delivery and reception of official telegrams, letters, and other correspondence.

The letter states that the Office of the President plans to hold cultural events, including concerts, exhibitions, presentations, and more, in the halls of the administrative building at 26 Baghramyan Avenue, as well as in the adjacent area.

“Considering that this concerns the presidential residence and the re-evaluation of its significance, in accordance with the 4th point of the 1st part of Article 52 of the Law of the Republic of Armenia on Local Self-Governance in Yerevan and the 1.1 part of Article 9 of the Law of the Republic of Armenia on Geographical Names, we kindly request to discuss the removal of the enumeration of the administrative area of the presidential residence at Baghramyan Avenue 26 and to name it as ‘House of the Republic’ in the established manner,” the letter states.

The Mayor of Yerevan has responded to the letter from the head of the Office of the President. Hayk Marutyun stated that the buildings occupied by the President of the Republic and his staff at 26 Baghramyan Avenue and their occupied land plot were designated under decision No. 1071-A dated April 8, 2019, as “Marshal Baghramyan Avenue 26/1.”

The Yerevan Mayor also informed that the question of naming the administrative area of the presidential residence as ‘House of the Republic’ will be presented for discussion at the upcoming session of the Yerevan City Council scheduled for April 23, 2019.
