Which Area Will The Ajapnyak Metro Station Be Built In?
The spokesperson for Yerevan's Mayor Haik Marutyan, Hakob Karapetyan, made a post on his Facebook page regarding the metro.
He specifically writes:
“About the metro:
In recent weeks, consultations on the development of the metro have been taking place regularly at the mayor's office, along with meetings with potential investors. It is known that during Soviet times, the tunnel from Barekamutyun to the Hrazdan Gorge, opposite today’s Tumanyan, was nearly completely constructed. According to the project, a bridge needs to be built from the gorge mouth to Ajapnyak, and the station will be opened there.
However, since the construction of a train-carrying bridge is quite an expensive endeavor, a proposal was made during this period to build a lighter structure, a bridge meant solely for pedestrians. This means that the metro station would end near the tunnel, and passengers would continue on foot to Ajapnyak, ideally using an escalator (similar to what is found in large airports).
This was a convenient option, as it would allow for the opening of the metro station at a significantly lower cost and essentially fulfill a pre-election promise.
However, Mayor Marutyan opposed this idea because it would mean, despite substantial expenses, the actual development of the metro in this direction would be halted. The mayor and his team preferred to take a more difficult path and attempted to construct a station on the right bank of the Hrazdan River, with hopes of later expanding it to Davtashen.
For this, it will be necessary to engage businesses to start construction in that area and participate in the metro's development. Moreover, the construction of this station and its realistic development prospects would make the neighborhood more attractive for developers and simultaneously allow for the resolution of the issues related to the aging and emergency housing stock in Ajapnyak.”
