Metro Development Program Enters Practical Phase, City Hall Proposal Attracts Investors

It has been about 40 years since the first journey of the Yerevan Metro. Today, the metro remains the most comfortable, environmentally friendly, fast, and safe mode of transportation. Nevertheless, due to its underdevelopment, the Yerevan Metro is not the most attractive transport option.

The last, 10th station of the metro, Charbakh, opened in 1996. Since then, there has been prolonged discussion about launching another station in Ajapnyak. The project, developed during Soviet times, remained on paper for decades. Now, city authorities have initiated a comprehensive program to complete the unfinished station and embark on a new phase of metro development, which is already in practical implementation.

“This must be a 100% business program, and with investments in the business plan, we should be able to implement the construction of the bridge and the new station,” says Yerevan’s chief architect Arthur Meshchyan.

The business program being considered by the City Hall includes two components: the construction of a shopping center next to the metro station and the renovation of the residential fund in the area.

Examples of community-private sector cooperation have already started attracting investors who are interested in participating in the metro station construction project. Businessman Arsen Iskandaryan has also familiarized himself with the future station site along with metro employees and construction workers.

The subway train to the new station will reach through a 525-meter long tunnel. This tunnel was built during the Soviet period but remained unfinished. Now, the tunnel passage will be completely modernized.

After a long-desired wish and extensive discussions, the anticipated project will finally come to life, making transportation safer and more convenient for the residents and guests of the capital.
