Food Prices Increased by 4.2% in One Month
According to official statistics, inflation in Armenia was very low at the beginning of the year. Based on information released by the Statistical Committee, inflation in January compared to the same period last year was only 0.6%. However, compared to December 2018, inflation reached 1.7% in January of this year. Over the past month, food prices have increased significantly by 4.2%, while the situation in other sectors has been milder, with either deflation recorded or inflation around 1%.
Potatoes have seen a sharp price increase of 15.1%, a product that former Member of Parliament from the Republican Party, Hakob Hakobyan, described as food for the poor, recommending to make do with it. Vegetables have increased by 28.8% compared to December, fruits by 6.7%, and leafy and stem vegetables by 38.6%. The price of lamb meat increased by 3.8%, while the price of pork decreased by 0.8%. Though modest, pasta prices rose by 0.4%, and bread prices increased by 0.6%,” the newspaper writes.
