Turkey Condemns Macron's Statement on Commemorating Armenian Genocide Day
Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's spokesperson İbrahim Kalın has responded to French President Emmanuel Macron's announcement regarding April 24 being observed in France as Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day. This was reported by Ermenihaber.
“We firmly condemn President Macron's statement that April 24 will be marked as the so-called Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day. The claims regarding the so-called Armenian Genocide are a political lie that lacks any legal basis and contradicts historical facts,” said Erdoğan's spokesperson.
Kalın added, “No one can blame Turkey for crimes it did not commit and stain our history. We criticize and reject Mr. Macron's attempt to turn historical events into a political commodity in order to save his own political issues.”
“Pitting suffering against each other and turning it into a political issue is a political and moral low. Turkey will continue to support all constructive efforts aimed at addressing the events that occurred during World War I through a shared pain and just memory approach.”
It should be noted that on February 5, French President Emmanuel Macron declared April 24 as Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day in France.
