Pashinyan on Pashinyan's Case: Interesting Situation in the ECHR
The newspaper "Jhangovurd" writes that Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's government is forced to answer for the actions of the former authorities. But the most interesting aspect is that his government will respond to the inquiries of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) related to Nikol Pashinyan's case.
While in captivity (in 2010 and 2011), political prisoner Nikol Pashinyan filed two complaints with the ECHR, claiming that the persecutions and his conviction were based on his opposition stance and activities. The ECHR has raised questions regarding the legality of actions against Pashinyan and their conformity to the European Convention on Human Rights based on these complaints.
It should be noted that Prime Minister Pashinyan has refused to seek compensation for the material and moral damages incurred, but, as lawyer Vahe Grigoryan reported, "Since his case is directly related to the overall context of the events of March 1, 2008, wherein the revelation of the truth and the administration of justice are crucial for Armenia's democratic future and the establishment of a stable culture of human rights and freedoms, he will continue to assert his claims as far as they serve these objectives."
It is not difficult to assume that the ruling in this case will be in favor of Nikol Pashinyan, similar to past decisions made by the ECHR regarding former political prisoners Alexander Arzumanyan, Grigor Voskerchyan, Masis Aivazyan, and Mushegh Sahakyan. Moreover, it is worth noting that the criminal cases initiated during the tenure of the former authorities and the charges against them are gradually collapsing in the ECHR.
