This Cannot Continue. The Investigative Committee is Determining the Circumstances of Mher Yeghiazaryan's Death
The Investigative Committee's Erevan and Nubarashen administrative district division is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Mher Yeghiazaryan, who was a detainee at the Nubarashen penitentiary. A forensic examination has been appointed. This information was reported by the Investigative Committee.
It is noteworthy that 44 days into a hunger strike, the detained journalist Mher Yeghiazaryan's death has also been addressed by the chairwoman of the National Assembly's Standing Committee on Human Rights and Public Affairs, Naira Zohrabyan.
She notably stated: 'Today, after a 44-day hunger strike, journalist Mher Yeghiazaryan died in the penitentiary. As the chairwoman of the Standing Committee on Human Rights and Public Affairs, I demand an explanation from the Minister of Justice and the court as to why my request to change the journalist's pre-trial detention conditions was not satisfied immediately after Mher's arrest? And how many more people need to die before we understand that this cannot continue? It simply cannot.'
Varujan Avetisyan, a member of the Sasna Tsrer party, also announced: 'The Ministry of Justice must, at the very least after this latest tragedy, fulfill the following obligations:
- Immediately provide complete information to the public regarding the circumstances of Mher Yeghiazaryan's death,
- Put an end to its self-satisfied and ostrich-like behavior, and present, within a short period, a draft strategy based on the primacy of human rights that ensures the modernization and humanization of the penitentiary system.'
