Venezuelan Opposition Leader Declares Himself Acting President

Juan Guaidó, the head of Venezuela's National Assembly and opposition leader, has declared himself the acting president of the country. He made this announcement during a rally in Caracas. According to El Nacional, Guaidó swore to officially carry out the powers of the Venezuelan presidency and to put an end to the usurpation of power. He also promised to refrain from using violence.

It is noteworthy that the National Assembly is practically uninvolved in the decision-making process. It is under the leadership of the political opponents of the country's leader, Nicolás Maduro.

U.S. President Donald Trump has already recognized Guaidó as the country's acting president. According to CNN, Washington is now planning strict sanctions against Caracas, specifically targeting the oil sector.

Meanwhile, current President Nicolás Maduro has been in office since winning the presidential elections held on January 10.
