Transforming Nubarashen Prison into a Museum: Discussions in the National Assembly

The Nubarashen Penitentiary may be closed due to poor building conditions, and inmates could be transferred to other prisons. This was stated today in the National Assembly by the candidate for the position of chair of the Human Rights Protection and Public Affairs Committee, Naira Zohrebyan.

Responding to Zohrebyan’s remarks, Sasun Mikayelyan, a member of the 'My Step' faction, noted that at least renovations should be made floor by floor in the Nubarashen prison. In reply, Zohrebyan emphasized that it would be more appropriate to close it instead.

“I can hardly imagine the renovation. Perhaps it would be more beneficial to build something new. We could close it and redistribute the inmates across the remaining ten penitentiary institutions,” Zohrebyan mentioned.

According to the lawmaker, renovations would pose a serious financial issue. “I am not sure how appropriate it is to renovate this building under the old system,” she stated.

Zohrebyan assured that she would also address the issues faced by life-sentenced prisoners.

It is noteworthy that the Prosperous Armenia faction has nominated Naira Zohrebyan for the position of chair of the National Assembly's Human Rights Protection and Public Affairs Committee.

Another lawmaker from the 'My Step' alliance, Nikolay Baghdasaryan, suggested converting the building into a museum, to which Naira Zohrebyan responded that it is an interesting approach.
