Green Signs to Be Implemented in Yerevan

To preserve the green areas of the capital, the Yerevan Municipality has launched a symbolic initiative. After the improvement and asphalting of the section of Buzyand Street from Mashtots Boulevard to Saryan Street, special 'green' signs have been installed to avoid damaging the trees adjacent to the roadway and parking lot.

“We had a problem in this area, and we needed to find a solution that would preserve those viable trees located in the roadway with their habitats. It was not possible to relocate them as they are 15-20 years old,” says Khachik Hakobyan, head of the environmental protection department of the municipality.

A compromising sign features a heart-shaped image of a tree in the middle. After discussions with the traffic police, this sign was chosen to warn and urge citizens to protect nature and treat it with care.

Another such sign has been installed near a tree adjacent to Brazil Square. The signs installed in the evening hours are reflective to ensure safe traffic. Based on necessity, more 'green' signs will be placed in other parts of the capital in the near future.

“Every tree is important for our city. In this regard, we will not spare resources for the care of trees and green spaces. The goal of the emerging urban culture is to raise awareness of care for trees and, in general, nature. They also highlight the approaches of the city authorities,” says Khachik Hakobyan.
