Six-Month-Old Baby Dies in Yerevan

A tragic incident has occurred in Yerevan. On January 16, a six-month-old baby died at the "Holy Mother of God" Medical Center.

The medical center informed NEWS.am Medicine that the child had been diagnosed with encephalomyelitis (inflammation of the brain and spinal cord). "The six-month-old child, living in the city of Ashtarak, was admitted to the intensive care unit of the 'Holy Mother of God' Medical Center on January 12, 2019, at 21:50 on the third day of the illness. The media outlet notes that the disease began with a high fever followed by general weakness, which prompted the parents to seek hospital care. Upon admission, the child's condition was extremely critical, with paralysis of all limbs, and the muscle tone and reflexes in the limbs were absent. Due to respiratory depression, the child was placed on artificial respiration. Numerous laboratory tests, neurological consultations, a brain CT scan, and a spinal puncture were performed.

The inflammation of the brain and spinal cord (encephalomyelitis) was identified. Virological tests were conducted at the Central CDC laboratory, and influenza A and B viruses were not detected. The child received antibacterial, antiviral, and symptomatic treatment; however, the treatment was ineffective, and on January 16, 2019, at 00:30, the patient passed away," the medical center reported.
