Now is the Time to Ban Sturgeon Fishing, Yet it’s the Exact Opposite: Bardukh Gabrielian
Not only large fish are being sold, but also fish eggs, and it is astonishing that no fines are being imposed for this. Bardukh Gabrielian, the director of the Scientific Center for Zoology and Hydroecology of the Armenian National Academy of Sciences, spoke about the sturgeon resources during a conversation with journalists today.
“It is now the spawning season, which indicates that fishing should especially be prohibited at this time, but it is quite the opposite. We were approached by the Ministry of Environment, asking when the spawning will occur. We told them after the 20th, but that does not mean we should not have protected the fish before that. With just one fish caught today, we are losing thousands of fish. The fight against corruption does not impact this issue at all. The fish stocks of Lake Sevan are state property, and it turns out that we are not protecting public assets,” he emphasized.
