EU to Allocate €8 Million to Strengthen Democracy in Armenia
The Armenian government considers it appropriate to ratify the financing agreement for the "EU for Citizens" initiative signed on November 29 and December 7, 2018, between Armenia and the European Union, aimed at strengthening democracy in Armenia.
The goal of the agreement is to enhance democracy in Armenia, increase trust in the government, and raise the level of civic engagement in the country.
The program is expected to yield results in various areas, including transparent and credible elections, open governance, accountability, respect for human rights, constructive dialogue mechanisms with civil society, development of participatory democracy, fostering an active media environment in Armenia, reinforcing women's engagement, and more.
At the same time, the program contributes to the sustainable development goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda, primarily targeting "Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls" and "Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all, and build effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions at all levels." The program is also expected to support other SDGs, such as "End poverty in all its forms everywhere," "Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education," and "Reduce inequality within and among countries."
The project proposed by the agreement is funded by the EU budget under the European Neighbourhood Instrument, with a total value of €8.04 million.
