The Constitution of Armenia Is a Barrier to Peace: Baku Sees Territorial Demands, Says Azerbaijani Ambassador

The main obstacle to peace remains the Constitution of Armenia. This was stated by Rashad Mamedov, the Azerbaijani ambassador to Turkey, in an interview with the Turkish newspaper Cumhuriyet.

Responding to a question about Baku's role in the blockade of the Armenia-Turkish border, he noted that regional resolution processes are proceeding in parallel.

"The process of normalizing relations between Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Turkey and the possible opening of borders directly depends on the signing of a peace treaty and constitutional changes in Yerevan. Azerbaijan and Turkey coordinate every diplomatic step and move forward exclusively together," the diplomat stated.

Mamedov asserts that the primary obstacle to peace remains the Constitution of Armenia, in which Baku sees territorial claims. The ambassador expressed confidence that following the parliamentary elections in Armenia on June 7, a constitutional referendum will take place, which will ultimately allow the parties to validate the already preliminarily signed peace treaty with their signatures.
