Time is Running Out: Trump Warns
U.S. President Donald Trump, in a phone interview with Axios, stated that "time is running out" for Iran and warned that if Iran does not present a more favorable offer regarding the deal, "they will suffer much stronger consequences." American officials claim that Trump wants to finalize an agreement that would end the war, but Iran's refusal to meet many of his demands and make significant concessions on its nuclear program raises the specter of military options once again.
It is expected that Trump will convene his top national security team at the White House Situation Room to discuss military options, according to two American officials. Yesterday, Trump discussed the situation concerning Iran with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The Pakistani Interior Minister visited Tehran on Saturday and Sunday to negotiate a ceasefire agreement with senior Iranian leaders. Pakistan is serving as an official mediator between the U.S. and Iran. The Prime Minister of Qatar, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, who is also acting as a mediator, held discussions with his Pakistani counterpart and the Iranian Foreign Minister.
Trump told Axios that he continues to believe Iran wants to reach a deal and noted that he is awaiting an updated Iranian offer, which he hopes will be better than the last proposal made a few days ago. Trump declined to specify a timeline for negotiations with Iran.
"We want to make a deal. They are not where we want them to be. They will have to reach that point, otherwise, they will suffer very greatly, and they don't want that," Trump stated.
He indicated that the U.S. would strike Iran "much harder than before" if they do not come forward with a better offer.
"The clock is ticking. They better hurry up, or they will have nothing left," Trump emphasized.
