Greece's Strong Reaction to Turkey's New Law
Greece has responded to the draft of the "Turkish Maritime Law" being developed by the Turkish government, which aims to legally establish Turkey's maritime borders in the Black Sea, Mediterranean, and Aegean Seas, reports ermenihaber.am.
Greece's Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis stated that unilateral actions cannot have international validity on issues requiring multilateral or bilateral agreements within the framework of international law. He emphasized that Athens could respond to such initiatives in various ways.
Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias also accused Turkey of pursuing "revisionist aims" (ideological-political currents that seek to revise and distort) and stressed that all Greek islands have the rights stipulated by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
At the same time, the Turkish side has claimed that the purpose of the law is to clarify the country's maritime jurisdictions and fill gaps in domestic legislation. The Turkish Ministry of Defense also emphasized that the armed forces will continue to defend the country’s rights and interests in maritime zones.
