Escalation in Armenian-Russian Relations: The European Conservative

The European Conservative publication has addressed the tensions in Armenia-Russia relations and Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's refusal of Vladimir Putin's proposal.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has rejected the option of a "soft, reasonable, and mutually beneficial divorce" suggested by Russian President Vladimir Putin. During a press conference, the head of government dismissed the idea that Armenia should choose between strengthening ties with the European Union and remaining a member of the Russia-led Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).

Previously, President Putin had suggested that Armenia hold a referendum to determine the country’s foreign economic orientation—whether to tighten ties with the EU or to remain within Moscow’s economic sphere. Putin also warned that Russia would draw appropriate conclusions based on the results of such a vote.

As noted by the publication, these developments come amid months of increasing tension. In April, Armenia announced that its membership in Russian-led structures, particularly the EAEU and the CSTO, could be reconsidered. This followed warnings from Moscow regarding the potential consequences of closer cooperation with the European Union and the United States.
