Mirzoyan Presents New Proposals in the National Assembly

During an extraordinary session of the National Assembly, Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan announced the intention to establish an Institute of Diplomatic Offices. According to the minister, this initiative pertains to countries where having a full embassy is not financially or otherwise feasible, yet there is a need for diplomatic presence. These offices will be headed by the Armenian ambassador accredited to that country.

“There are countries where it is not considered practical from a financial or any other standpoint to open a full embassy, but there is a necessity for a diplomatic presence, and in that case, we propose to establish a diplomatic office, which will be managed by the ambassador of Armenia accredited to that country,” the minister noted.

The legislative proposal also revises the terms of service for permanent representatives and ambassadors. It is suggested to set a maximum term of 5 years. After this period, they may be appointed to another international organization or country; however, the total duration of two consecutive terms cannot exceed 8 years. At the same time, provisions are included for the early recall of diplomatic representatives before the stipulated term.

The amendments presented by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also include regulations concerning the remuneration of diplomatic staff.
