A Section of the Gas Pipeline from Georgia to Armenia Will Be Relocated: Details

The decision to relocate a 5.5-kilometer section of the gas pipeline operating between Armenia and Georgia is due to the technical inadequacy of the pipeline. The Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure of Armenia stated, in response to a query from Sputnik Armenia, that the aim of the work is to ensure a reliable and uninterrupted gas supply for the republic.

Earlier, the Georgian side informed that the mentioned section of the gas pipeline would be relocated at the request of the Armenian side, and the head of the Office of the Prime Minister of Armenia, Arayik Harutyunyan, indicated that this might be related to the demarcation process between the two countries.

According to the ministry, this main pipeline is of strategic importance, as it accounts for over 80 percent of the natural gas imported from Russia. The newly constructed section will help reduce the risks of accidents and disruptions. The ministry also assured that there will be no interruptions in gas supply in Armenia during the construction.

The process has already begun and is expected to be completed by the end of 2027. The project is being implemented and financed by Georgian funds. The matter has been previously agreed upon within the framework of the intergovernmental commission for economic cooperation between Armenia and Georgia.
