Fifth Dismissal Linked to Vedi Controversy
The Prosecutor of the Ararat region, Vardan Poghosyan, has submitted his resignation, as confirmed by the Office of the General Prosecutor. Vardan Poghosyan has left his position based on his own request, according to information provided to Azatutyun.
This marks the fifth dismissal in the law enforcement agencies of the Ararat region, which has followed the case of sexual violence against underage sisters in Vedi. The previous day, Criminal Police Chief of Ararat Regional Administration Saribek Rustamyan, Community Police Chief of Vedi Armen Mkrtchyan, Head of the Ararat Regional Investigative Department Tigran Shakoyan, and Head of the Vedi Investigative Division Lernik Vardanyan were also dismissed.
Reports of sexual violence against two underage sisters residing in the Vedi community were brought to the attention of the local school back in February. According to the minors' lawyers, the abuse continued until April 22 due to the inaction of law enforcement agencies. The investigation into the case commenced only after media revelations.
Suspected perpetrators were detained yesterday for a two-month period. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated during a press briefing that the case has been revealed thanks to the efforts of law enforcement.
