American Bank Employee Disconnected Call from Pope

An employee of a technical support department at an American bank disconnected a call while speaking with Pope Levon XIV when he identified himself. This was reported by The New York Times, citing Father Tom McCarthy from Illinois, who has been close to the Pope for many years.

According to McCarthy, the incident occurred about two months after Levon XIV's ascension to the papacy. The Pope had called the bank to change his phone number and address. He identified himself using his secular name, Robert Prevost.

Although the pontiff accurately answered security verification questions, the bank employee stated that it was not sufficient and insisted that he visit the bank’s branch in the United States in person. “I can’t do that. I have answered all the verification questions,” he responded.

The Pope attempted to explain his inability to appear in person. “Would it matter if I said I am Pope Levon?” he asked. Following these words, the bank employee disconnected the call. It is unclear how the situation was resolved and whether the Pope was able to remotely change his information.

Levon XIV was elected as Pope in May 2025 following the death of Pope Francis. He is the first pontiff in history to represent the United States.
