Harsh Reactions from Russian Media to the EU Summit in Yerevan

Russian media did not overlook the EU summit taking place in Yerevan, particularly noting the visit of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Some Russian outlets assess these events as a serious blow to Armenian-Russian relations. News.am reports on this matter.

In particular, “Svobodnaya Pressa” writes: “At this very moment, the final and irreversible dismantling of the remnants of allied relations is taking place in Yerevan. Volodymyr Zelensky has arrived in Yerevan to participate in the summit of the European Political Community.” The article titled “Zelensky in Yerevan: You Won’t Get Much from Pashinyan, But in the ‘Warm Friendship Group’ One Can Throw Fists at Moscow from the Mountains of the Caucasus” notes: “Consider the surrealism of what is happening: in the territory of a country that is still formally an ally of Russia and nominally continues to be a member of the CSTO, the entire ‘elite group’ of Western bases has gathered. Keir Starmer, Emmanuel Macron, Ursula von der Leyen, Kaja Kallas, and other patrons of the war against Russia are discussing in Yerevan how to more effectively supply weapons to Ukraine and ‘build stability’ at the expense of pushing Russia out of the region, just 90 km from the Russian 102nd military base.”

The authors of the publication believe that “for Nikol Pashinyan, it is extremely important to receive pre-election sweet cakes from Brussels in the form of the ‘Armenia—European Union’ summit. This event wouldn’t be so poisonous if it weren’t for Zelensky’s presence, which completely changes the meaning of what is happening. Instead of discussing the ‘Armenian future,’ all attention will focus on begging for new tranches for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. At the same time, it is worth reminding the Armenian voter that Zelensky recently flirted with Ilham Aliyev, who received him in Gabala and openly admired the ‘military solution’ to the Nagorno-Karabakh issue.”

The article highlights that Baku refused to participate in the summit, and a day earlier, the country's parliament adopted an official decision to suspend cooperation with the European Union due to a resolution on “Supporting Democratic Stability in Armenia.” The document is described in the article as “openly anti-Russian and anti-Azerbaijani.”

“Azerbaijan's position is consistent: Europeans have no right to dictate their will to us. And Armenia is trying to maneuver, flattering one side and then the other,” the article states.

Meanwhile, “Moskovsky Komsomolets” quotes the head of the Center for Military and Political Studies, Andrey Klintsevich: “This is yet another demonstrative step by official Yerevan, confirming a final break from Eurasian integration realities.” “Holding the summit of the European Political Community—a structure that is, by its essence, an ‘anti-Russian club’—in a country that formally still remains a member of the CSTO and the EAEU means to spit in the face of our common agreements,” Klintsevich notes. According to the political scientist, Pashinyan continues his dangerous game.

“The attempt to sit on two chairs at once, flirting with Western patrons at the moment when it is necessary to decide on the security vector, is a strategy that leads nowhere,” the political scientist believes. “Moscow understands perfectly well the price of such ‘European gatherings.’ Inviting the Ukrainian leader to a platform where issues directly threatening Russia’s interests are discussed will not go unnoticed.”

In an interview with Gazetoy.Ru, Russian MP Alexander Tolmachev stated: “Armenia could repeat Ukraine’s fate if it makes a wrong decision regarding the choice of historical path. The neighboring country risks serving itself up as a dish on the European table.”
