Iranian Ayatollahs Call on Government
Two influential and radical Iranian ayatollahs have called on the government to expedite the election of a new Supreme Leader following the assassination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, state media reports.
They emphasized that the timely selection of a successor is crucial for better governance of state affairs.
Grand Ayatollah Naser Makarem Shirazi stated that the appointment of a new leader is a religious duty for Muslims until the evil of these criminals is eliminated from the world.
His colleague, Hossein Nouri Hamadani, urged members of the Assembly of Experts to hasten the election process to avoid delays in the transfer of power.
Currently, the role of Supreme Leader is temporarily carried out by a three-member council consisting of the President, a senior cleric, and the head of the judicial system. The Iranian constitution requires the election of a new leader within three months; however, the timelines remain uncertain due to the ongoing war.
