No Clarification Given from Georgia: Papoyan on the Issue of Truck Drivers
Armenia has yet to receive an official explanation from Georgia regarding the specific violations that led to the detention of Armenian carriers' trucks. This was stated by Armenian Minister of Economy Gevorg Papoyan during a conversation with journalists.
The Minister noted that the current situation surrounding the truck drivers is also unclear to him. He mentioned that a few days ago, the Georgian Minister of Economy visited Armenia and indicated that the issue is not within the jurisdiction of their ministry, but rather pertains to the country's financial police.
“Two days later, he contacted me and mentioned that they had identified risks associated with certain goods. Nevertheless, I requested clarification on what specific risks were being referred to,” Papoyan stated.
The Minister also addressed speculations suggesting that the situation might be linked to Georgia's concerns about the potential weakening of its transit role in light of the possible unblocking of communications between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Papoyan noted that he cannot comment on such assumptions.
“I have asked them to specify which driver has committed a particular violation—today, yesterday, or earlier. For example, if the driver of a given vehicle had a paperwork issue, that’s one situation. But when the trucks are stopped and we receive no clarifications, that’s a different situation,” the Minister emphasized.
He added that some trucks have already crossed the border, but issues remain concerning certain batches and vehicles.
It is worth mentioning that Armenian truck drivers have reported that starting from February 12, the process of entering Georgia from Armenia has become significantly more complicated.
