Rafah Border Crossing with Gaza to Reopen After Long Closure
The Israeli authorities have announced that the Rafah border crossing will reopen in both directions this weekend, allowing Palestinians to enter and exit the territory after nearly two years of closures. The Israeli military body coordinating aid to Gaza, COGAT, stated in a release on Friday that "only limited movement of people will be permitted."
The reopening of the Rafah crossing is a significant step within the framework of the ceasefire proposal for Gaza suggested by U.S. President Donald Trump. This crossing, which serves as the main gateway for Gaza to the outside world, has been mostly closed since May 2024.
It has been noted that individuals crossing the border will be inspected by both Israel and Egypt, with oversight provided by European Union border service personnel. Palestinians who left Gaza during the conflict will be allowed to return after obtaining the necessary security clearance from Israel.
Reports also indicate that Israel was previously opposed to the reopening of the crossing; however, the discovery of the remains of the last hostage held in Gaza on Monday has contributed to progress in this process.
