Doctors Treating Injured Protesters Arrested in Iran, Reports Say
The Iranian authorities are arresting doctors and healthcare workers who provide assistance to injured protesters during the violent suppression of mass demonstrations, according to reports from The Guardian citing human rights advocates.
According to the Norwegian Hengaw organization, at least seven doctors and volunteers have been arrested in recent days. One of those arrested, 52-year-old surgeon Alireza Golchini from the city of Qazvin, is accused of 'mohareb' (waging war against God), an offense that can result in the death penalty in Iran.
Relatives report that the doctor was violently apprehended after publicly offering assistance to wounded protesters. They claim that he was beaten during the arrest, his arm and ribs were broken, and he was taken away in front of his family.
