Trump Withdraws Invitation for Canada to Join the Peace Council
U.S. President Donald Trump has withdrawn the invitation for Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to join the Peace Council. This decision was made following Mr. Carney's speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where the Prime Minister condemned the United States for using economic leverage against other countries, Reuters reports.
Later, Donald Trump posted a message directed at Mark Carney on the Truth Social media platform, stating that Canada would no longer be able to join "the most prestigious council of leaders ever created." A week earlier, officials from Mr. Carney's office confirmed that they had received an invitation to join the Peace Council and added that Canada "planned to accept the invitation."
The Peace Council was originally intended to monitor the maintenance of peace conditions in Gaza. The initiative has been established with a United Nations Security Council resolution. Donald Trump later announced an expanded mandate for the organization to resolve conflicts in other parts of the world. Fifty-eight countries have received invitations to join the organization, and U.S. allies such as the United Kingdom, France, and Italy have stated they will not join at this time.
