No Incidents Recorded at Armenian-Azerbaijani Border After Washington Meetings: Markus Ritter

No incidents have been recorded at the Armenian-Azerbaijani border following the meetings in Washington. There were gunfire from both sides during the night, but no targeted shooting between border positions, stated Markus Ritter, head of the EU monitoring mission in Armenia, during a public broadcast. He pointed out that they can bring stability and help reduce tension in the region, and this is the result they can guarantee.

“In the spring of 2025, there were shots fired in the area north of Goris and east of Sotk. We have observed that these incidents have ceased. Incidents occurred in the summer of 2023, including extensive ones in Yeraskh, Sotk, and Verin Hand, carried into 2024. I take pride that incidents have ceased at the border. Once a peace treaty is signed and ratified, we will no longer be needed, but we will continue to visit border communities. There is an agreement to continue our work and make visits to border communities,” he added.

“We are impartial, neutral, and do not only look at Azerbaijani territory, we also observe Armenian territory. We are visible to both sides at the border. Besides binoculars, we have cameras, and we take photographs from the border. We archive our data and present reports to Brussels. There is now a greater chance for peace and a future. There are reports that trains with oil and gas are arriving in Armenia, which inspires confidence,” said Markus Ritter.
