Moldova Exits the CIS
The government of Chișinău has initiated the process of canceling three fundamental agreements that underpin Moldova's membership in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). This announcement was made by Foreign Minister Mihai Popșoi during a broadcast on 'Radio Moldova,' emphasizing that after the termination of these agreements, officially and legally, 'Moldova will no longer be part of the CIS,' despite the fact that its membership had already been suspended 'some time ago.'
Moldova's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister clarified that the disputed agreements pertain to the CIS Charter signed in Minsk on January 22, 1993, the agreement on the creation of the CIS dated December 8, 1991, and the appendix to this agreement dated December 22, 1991. According to Popșoi, the cancellation process is already underway, and members of parliament will discuss the relevant documents at the very beginning of the new parliamentary session.
'We will probably complete the government's procedures by mid-February, after which the parliamentary decision will be made,' the minister's words were quoted by Moldova's state news agency 'Moldpres.'
Mihai Popșoi described the cancellation of the CIS membership agreements as 'an important step in strengthening the country's European orientation.'
