France Declines to Join Peace Council; Trump Threatens Tariffs
US President Donald Trump has announced that he may impose tariffs of up to 20% on French wines and champagnes as a means to pressure French President Emmanuel Macron into joining his proposed 'Peace Council.' According to Trump, the council would be responsible for overseeing peace in the Gaza Strip.
According to sources from Bloomberg, Macron is not planning to join the initiative, arguing that its goals are not limited to Gaza and could contradict the principles and institutional mechanisms of the United Nations. Due to these concerns, France has opted out of participation.
As reported by Reuters, Trump stated in response to reporters' questions that Macron's refusal is not decisive for him, emphasizing that the French president's term does not end until 2027. He reiterated the threat of tariffs as a political lever.
Trump announced the formation of the 'Peace Council' on January 16. The initial idea was for it to serve as a transitional structure aimed at the recovery of Gaza. However, according to Bloomberg, the council's charter proposes a broader mission focused on promoting stability and ensuring governance in conflict-affected areas. The Financial Times notes that the structure could compete with the UN's mandate.
